Winners of the 2012 Division 5 and Champion of Champions

The Federation National League consists of 6 Divisions of 5 teams although the bottom 2 divisions only have 4 teams. Each season the top 2 teams gain promotion and the bottom 2 teams get relegated meaning that that there is a lot of movement in the leagues.

Teams play on the last Sunday of each month and have 12 bowlers at home and 12 away meaning 24 bowlers playing for each team. Each individual winners gets one point for their team and there is a 2 point bonus for the aggregates at home and away. The winning aggregate overall gets a massive 4 points bonus meaning there are 32 points to play for in total.

In our second season we started off in Division 5 having kept our place from last season following a revamp of the leagues.

In the first game we played local rivals Worth Valley which was always going to be a tight affair, in the end we won 17-15.

This meant that any win against UK Police would ensure the league title but if we got 12 or less we would get relegated. An excellent days bowling from all the team saw us get a 19-13 win to wrap up the title.

The Champion of Champions at Todmorden

Winning the league meant that we qualified for the Champion of Champions at Todmorden Park. The winners of each of the six Federation Leagues played off in this end of season showpiece. We were in Section B with Bury and South Lancashire, while section A consisted of Mid Cheshire, Barnsley and Leeds.

We opened up against Division 4 table-toppers Bury and won 7-3 before drawing 5-5 against division 2 champions Barnsley. We concluded by edging out Division 6 winners South Lancashire 6-4 which led us to the final against National Division 1 champions Mid Cheshire.

Mick Hall and Gary Whelan were the only Aire-Wharfe winners in the first five jacks, leaving Mid Cheshire three ahead. Superb wins by Richard Stockdale (21-6) and Neil Nicholson (21-5) turn the match around and meant last man on, Graham Oliver had to win to 19 to win the cup for us. Graham won his game 21-13 meaning we won the final by 7. This is a great achievement in only our second season in the Federation league.

We would like to thank the host clubs, Guiseley, Rufford and Shipley who all put on lovely greens, food and refreshments. Also, we would like to thank the captains, Gary Whelan and Mark Barker, Vice captains Mick Hall and Pete Hepworth and all the bowlers who put themselves out to play for their district.

IAN FORDER AW FEDERATION PLAYER OF THE SEASON

Following our league win we decided that as a lasting legacy to our former president Ian Forder, who put a lot of time and effort into us entering the federation, we should have a federation player of the season in his memory. Ian has been sadly missed this season in our preparations for the federation league and I am sure he would have been very proud of our achievements.

Special mentions must go to Pete Hepworth, who not only drove the team bus to all of the matches but also got a great 21-5 win to set us up for victory against the Police. The following players won 2 out of 2 matches: Tom Cater, Mark Barker, Graham Oliver and Ian Matthews. The following players won 2 out of the 3 matches they played Martin Benson, Joe Stockdale, Danny Carter, Brian Wheeler, Mick Hall, Richard Stockdale, Neil Nicholson, Steve Ainley and Steve Morris.

This season's Ian Forder Federation player of the season, the only player to win all 3 matches, is...

John Benson
