Aire-Wharfe Federation

Welcome to the  Airedale & Wharfedale Federation Pages

The Aire-Wharfe CGBA entered the Federation League in 2011 for the first  time.  Our late President, Ian Forder was the major influence in  entering a squad to play representative bowls on a regular basis to raise  the profile of our association.  The decision was taken to enter a single team into the Federation and we haven't looked back since.  Sadly, Ian passed away in 2012 and missed our crowning glory so fa when we won the Champion of Champions.  However, all the team felt as if we did it for him and he would be looking down with pride and approval.

If you would like to be considered for selection for the Aire-Wharfe Federation team, complete and send the form below

The Federation League comprises of 6 divisions.  Each fixture has 24  bowlers representing the Aire -Wharfe Crown Green Bowls Association.  12 players play in the home  leg (at a venue decided by the captains/selectors) and 12 play at a venue  decided by the opposition.  The scoring system goes something like  this:

  • 1 point for each winner at each venue so 24 points are available here
  • 2 points at each venue for winning the aggregate so another 4 points are  available
  • 4 points for the association which wins the overall aggregate

I'm sure you have all worked out that we play for 32 points overall.

A rocky first season saw the team survive in Division Five by virtue of a  league re-organisation. We took full advantage of that by winning  Division Five in 2012. To top that, we also won the Champion of  Champions Trophy at Todmorden Park in September 2012.

Champion of Champions winning team 2012

After the successes of 2012, it was decided to apply to enter a second team  in the league for 2013. The application was accepted and the team were  placed in Division Five. The B Team has proved its worth as 4 players  , to press, who may not have been noticed by the association have been  promoted to play in the A Team over the season.

Selection to play for the teams  is strictly based upon players making regular appearances in their club's  league matches within the association. This policy is paying dividends  as players who may not have played in our association are being attracted by  the opportunity to play in one of our Federation teams. If any player  wishes to be considered for selection, let one of the team captains know. Competition for places is keen, but don't let that put you off. The  more names the selectors have to choose from the better those teams will be. Please do not be discouraged if you do not make one of the squads  immediately, your chance will come.

The Federation travel all over  the North and Midlands of England and even have occasion to venture over the  border to Wales. To keep costs to a minimum and not to unfairly burden  the away team with the costs, each team is charged the same whether home or away. There is also a minibus booked for away trips which warrant one. All the players are encouraged to travel on the bus. If a player  decides to make their own way to the venue they will still be charged full  subs.
