2014 News

Myrtle Park finally won the League title after a 4 year absence.  To win 17-13 at Skipton Devonshire was afitting way to lift the title. The rallying call form skipper Dave to "Do it for Mick" gave the team the impetus to go out and give a top performance.

Our President, Michael Upton underwent operation today. All at the club wish him well and a speedy recovery.

Myrtle Park finally won the Aire-Wharfe 4 person team competition (IB Thompson) at Greenbottom today.  The squad made up of Pete Hepworth (Cpt), Graham Lomax, Mark Barker, Gary Bowdin and Guy Greene won through a tough group at Grovehill to qualify for the semi-finals at Greenbottom. A 5-1 win against Ilkley in the semis put them through to the final against a strong Greengates team.  To card all four winners in the final and a 6-0 win was a great achievement and testament to the togetherness of the team over the day.

Winner of  todays Aire-Wharfe, Harry Wise competition for 3rd and 4th Division bowlers was competed for at Burley in Wharfedale.  MICHAEL SLATERof Myrtle Park  beat Graham Stockhill of Ilkley 21-14 and now qualifies for the Champion of Champions at Idle at the end of  the season. 26 entries and Michael played 5 matches in total.  Well done young man, another feather in your cap

Congratulations to Dave Upton who won the Upton Cup today at Myrtle Park.

Will Baildon be a safe place on Saturday?  Have you heard that most of the first team are going to be wearing pink tutu's at Baildon on Saturday!

Skipper Dave's sisters are taking part in the Race For Life at Leeds - the "Pretty Muddy" version, raising money for cancer research, and Dave said if they raised 400 he would wear a pink tutu when bowling on Saturday.  This soon became most of the team if they raised 500!  He has cleared it with the Baildon captain, Bob Lyons, who has no problem with it .As they are now very near their target I have been despatched to  buy 10 tutus!!

Myrtle pair, Gary Bowdin & Pete Hepworth were runners up in the Dacre Banks Pairs.  On the way to the final they defeated fellow Myrtler's Mark Barker & Nigel Breadley in the 1/4 finals.  Gary & Pete lost 14-21 to Stephen Walker & Mark Reynolds but picked up a very generous runners up cheque.

Myrtle's Michael Slater was runner up in the Bradford League Junior Handicap competition on Sunday. He qualified from the  group for the final with 2 victories and a hard fought 21-20 defeat. He was beaten in the final 21-14 by Ben Stockdale from Guiseley.

The Yorkshire Parks Merit

Myrtle had 3 players entered into this prestigous competition, Michael Upton, Dave Upton and Pete Hepworth.  Michael had a tough draw against Skipton's Peter Clark and went out first round.  Pete Hepworth faired slightly better in beating Mally Fowler 21-16 before exiting to Joe Cranston 8-21.

Dave made his way through two tight games to get to the Quarter Finals.  R1 he beat Josh Mordue 21-19, next up he played, arguably, his best of the day...trailing 16-20 to Liam Griffen, Dave fought his way back to win on a measure 21-20.  In the last 16, Dave defeated Brian Thompson before losing to the in form Paul Gill.  Great effort Dave.

The Alf Fowler Pairs 2014

A very good turn out of 16 players battled it out for the Alf Fowler Pairs Trophy 2014.  Congratulations to the two Michaels of Slater and Upton who got the better of Christine Pollard and Chris Bridge 21-17 in a very entertaining final.  The report will be available later today on the Club Competitions page.

Guiseley Triples Competition

Despite a spirited effort by Steve, Dave and Sharon, they exited at the 1/4 final stage against the eventual winners, Pudsey.  Steve Morris took an early lead against Jon Edmondson but eventually lost out 16-21 in the singles.  Dave Upton & Sharon Gadd were playing superbly in the pairs and took a 15-6 lead when they lost the jack.  Pudsey pair of Andy Hodgson & James Hanson set longer marks into the corners.  With Sharon struggling to get 'em there, they went 15-16 down.  They did win the jack back and ran the game out 21-16 but lost out on the biggest break rule.  Good effort by the triples team.

Guiseley Triples Competition

Monday evening's qualifying event had two teams with Myrtle players attempting to qualify for the Finals night on Friday 28th.  Unfortunately the teams of Steve Griffiths, Chris Dickerson & Mick Cook went out to Rufford (13-42) whilst Pete Hepworth & Mark Barker lost 20-21 in the pairs and Neil Nicholson lost 19-21 in the singles to the second exit at the hands of Mick & Rod Bastow and Barry Turnbull.

Better news came from Tuesday evening when the team of Steve Morris, Dave Upton and Sharon Gadd qualified and toppled one of the favourites en-route in Pudsey.  Steve Morris provided the following report as we wish them good luck in the finals:

I think we probably provided one of the upsets by beating a Pudsey side including Chris & Josh Mordue & Hedley Kettlewell. I had a very close game with Josh which I managed to edge to 19. Then Sharon & David pulled off 'the shock' by easily beating Chris & Hedley to 7, I think both Chris & Hedley would admit they never really got going & credit to Sharon & David they took full advantage.
We then had to take on one of the many Skipton sides of Danny Moore, Rob Ellis Snr & Andy Uttley, these games were played simultaneously which added to the tension. I played Andy in a good hearted affair with some good ends too which I managed to win to 16. Sharon & David meanwhile got off to a slow start against Dan & Rob but a change of lead bowler provided the change & chalks we needed & because I came off with a 5 point lead it seemed to take the pressure off our two who ran out to 11.
Looking forward to Friday's finals night now.

Silsden 4 Player Team Competition

The Myrtle lads fell at the 1/4 final stage of the annual Silsden 4 Player Team competition.  The team of Steve Morris, Mark Regan, Pete Hepworth and Neil Nicholson had scored 77 but conceded 78.  Unfortunately, Mark Barker had to pull out of the team after qualification on Tuesday 18th March so Neil Nicholson of Pudsey stepped in for the finals day.  To fall by the narrowest of margins was hard to take but all credit to the team of Hedley Kettlewell, Dave Smith, John Parkin and Ken Brenkley who played the green well.

Michael Upton

The natural choice to step in our late President's shoes was Michael H Upton.  The club is proud to announce Mick accepted the honour and is now, officially, Myrtle Park Bowls Club President

Mick Upton

Norman Upton

Norman's family and friends gathered to say their farewells to the man who played a big part in their lives today.  Norman was given a proper send off and a slideshow of moments from his life was presented at the Bradford & Bingley Sports Club after the service and cremation.  A glass was raised by all.

It is hoped Norman's family can provide some more photos and eulogies of Norman so a page can be created for this site as a long lasting memory

Norman's funeral details confirmed

Norman Upton

The family have announced the details of the funeral:

The cremation will take place at Nab Wood Crematoriam 10:50am

A gathering, including refreshments has been arranged at the Bradford & Bingley Sports Club, Wagon Lane, Bingley after the conclusion of ceremonies at the crematorium.

There will be a full announcement in this Thursday's Telegraph & Argus.

It is, with great sadness, that I have to report the passing away of our President, Mr Norman Upton.  Norman was Myrtle Park through and through.  Norman was immensley proud of the club and of his son (Michael) and grandson (David) who he came to watch at every home game.

Norman Upton

Norman will be missed by the club and his family.  Our thoughts go to Mick, Sheila, David and all the family at this sad time.

Further details will be reported in due course
